Rules and Regulations

These are the Rules and Regulations of the Hannover International Violin Competition. The complete application materials may be ordered by e-mail.

General Information and Regulations

1. The Hannover International Violin Competition
— »Dedicated to Joseph Joachim« — will be held from 5 to 18 November 2000 in Hannover. It is a triennial event. The Competition is presented by the Stiftung Niedersachsen (Foundation of Lower Saxony).

2. The Competition is open to violinists of all nationalities born between 18 November 1970 and 5 November 1984.

3. The International Jury is composed of 12 members, chaired by a non-voting chairman. Its task is to evaluate the competitors´ performances on the basis of regulations which apply to all rounds of the competition and to choose the winners. All decisions of the jury are final and incontestable.

4. The International Honors Committee is composed of personalities from the international world of music who provide their support and advice to the Competition.

5. The Artistic Director is responsible for all tasks of a primarily artistic nature relevant to the Competition and is a member of the International Jury.

6. The Executive Director is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the Competition.

7. The Foundation of Lower Saxony as presenter of the competition holds unlimited rights to the recording, filming and video-taping and to live, tape-delayed or future media transmission of all Competition rounds and concerts nationally and internationally. The competitors have no claim to compensation.

Application Requirements

1. Formal application must be filed in writing to the following address:

Deadline for the receipt of applications is 1 June 2000.

2. In addition to the application form, the following must be enclosed:

  • birth certification or similar official document furnishing proof of date and place of birth
  • 2 passport pictures, signed on the reverse
  • one black and white glossy photograph (at least 9 x 12 cm)
  • a curriculum vitæ
  • two letters of recommendation, written especially for the Hannover International Violin Competition by
    • the current or most recent teacher
    • a musician of acknowledged international standing
  • a high-quality recording (MusiCassette, CD, MD or DAT) of the applicant playing the following works from the competition program (cf. »Repertoire«):
    • from the selected work by J. S. Bach (Preliminary Round/First Session)
      BWV 1001 3rd and 4th movement
      BWV 1002 Sarabande & Tempo de Borea (with Doubles)
      BWV 1003 3rd & 4th movement
      BWV 1004 3rd & 4th movement
      BWV 1005 3rd & 4th movement
      BWV 1006 Preludio & Loure
    • one of the selected capriccios (Preliminary Round/First Session)
    • the first movement of the violin concerto selected for the final round accompanied by piano

All works must be recorded with no editing. The recording engineer must fill out and sign the enclosed recording certificate. It must accompany the tape.

3. By signing the application, the applicant accepts the rules and regulations of the Competition and agrees to perform for no further fee at the Prize Winners’ Gala Concert on 18 November 2000.

In addition, she/he agrees to carry out the concert engagements which are part of the Competition Prizes.
A concert fee considered appropriate by the Competition organizer and the organization offering the engagement will be negotiated for these concerts in each individual case.

She/he agrees, if requested to do so, to perform a concert in Hannover without fee for the benefit of the Hannover International Violin Competition to be held in 2003. Expenses will be covered by the Foundation of Lower Saxony.

4. The applicants who have been selected as competitors will be notified on 15 July 2000. All applicants will be informed of selection or rejection. The competitors must confirm their intention to participate by transferring a registration fee of 100 DM by 30 August 2000 to a bank account to be named.

5. Each competitor must register personally at the Competition office in Hannover on 3 November 2000.

6. The Competition authorities retain the right to reject any application which does not conform in its entirety to the Competition regulations.

7. Only the German text of these regulations is valid in case of dispute. Any disputes will be settled before a Hannover court of law.

Competition Procedure

1. Each competitor will be offered accomodations with a family in Hannover from 3 to 19 November 2000 inclusive. Hotel accommodations can be arranged for the competitor, pianists and other accompanying persons at the competitor’s request and at her/his own expense.

2. Each competitor is entitled to a reimbursement of travel expenses. The reimbursement will be made upon presentation of travel documents in Hannover. It will be equivalent to the most economical round-trip plane or train fare for the journey from the competitor´s point of departure to Hannover. The reimbursement can be advanced to the competitor upon application.

3. For the Competition, accompanists of the highest accomplishment will be available to the competitors at no cost. Competitors may bring their own accompanists at their own expense. Rehearsals can begin at the Academy of Music and Theater Arts Hannover on 3 November 2000.

4. The competitors will perform in the order drawn by lots at noon on 4 November 2000. Each competitor must be present personally or send an authorized representative. The order of appearance will remain unaltered throughout the Competition. The order can only be changed for reason of force majeure. The final decision rests with the Jury. Any change in the order of appearance will apply to one round of the Competition only.

5. The Competition consists of five sections: the two sessions of the preliminary round, the two sessions of the semi-final round and the final round. All rounds are open to the public. The competitors will not be interrupted during their performance. The program of all sections can be found on the page »Repertoire«.
